The Pololu 3pi robot is a complete, high-performance mobile platform featuring two micro metal gearmotors, five reflectance sensors, an 8×2 character LCD, a buzzer, and three user pushbuttons, all connected to a C-programmable ATmega328 microcontroller. Capable of speeds exceeding 3 feet per second, 3pi is a great first robot for ambitious beginners and a perfect second robot for those looking to move up from non-programmable or slower beginner robots.

The 3pi robot is designed to excel in line-following and maze-solving competitions and makes a great platform for people with C programming experience to learn robotics. At its heart is an Atmel ATmega328 microcontroller running at 20 MHz with 32KB of flash program memory and 2KB data memory, enough space to run complicated programs. An extra 512 bytes of persistent flash memory is provided on the microcontroller for data logging or long-term learning applications. You can use AVR Studio or WinAVR for development. The 3pi is also compatible with the popular Arduino development environment.
Digital I/O lines PD0 and PD1 are available; two more analog inputs and one analog/digital pin can be made available by removing jumpers and disabling special features of the board.

Comes with 4 LEDs. Needs 4 AAA batteries, not included.

Check out this demo video!

  • Processor : ATmega168/328P
  • Motor driver : TB6612FNG
  • Motor channels : 2
  • User I/O lines : 21
  • Minimum operating voltage : 3 V2
  • Maximum operating voltage : 7 V2
  • Maximum PWM frequency : 80 kHz
  • Reverse voltage protection? : Y
  • External programmer required? : Y
  • 9.5 cm/3.7" diameter (“3 pi” diameter)
  • 83 g/2.9 oz without batteries
Documents: NOTE: An external AVR ISP programmer, such as our USB AVR programmer is required to program the 3pi. The 3pi is powered by 4 AAA batteries, which are not included. We recommend rechargeable 4 x AAA NiMH or Alkaline cells , which may be purchased from rhydoLABZ or at a local store carrying electronics.

    • Q
    • Can you please tell me how to program it on arduino, I didn't quite understand the pdf

asked by Arnav Rajesh on June 06, 2016
    • A
    • With a simple installation of some files in your sketchbook directory, it becomes possible to program the 3pi robot using the Arduino IDE and libraries.

Unlike the orginal Arduino Biards the 3Pi doesnt have bootloader which aid simple serial programming. Therefore we will have to opt for
ICSP and Pololu recommends their USB AVR Programmer (see the related products below).

To configure the Arduino Environment for 3Pi, download the Pololu Library (https://www.pololu.com/file/download/libpololu-arduino-150324.zip?file_id=0J868) and copy the libpololu-arduino folder from the ZIP file into the “hardware” subfolder of your Arduino sketchbook location. The Arduino sketchbook location is typically in your Documents folder in a subfolder named “Arduino”. You can see the sketchbook location in the Arduino IDE Preferences dialog, which is available from the File menu.

After installing the add-on and restarting the Arduino IDE, you should see several new features inside the Arduino IDE

You should see an entry for the Pololu USB AVR Programmer in the Programmer menu which would help you to program your 3Pi.

    • Q
    • Can it work with arduino version 1.6.9?

asked by Arnav Rajesh on June 07, 2016
    • A
    • As per Pololu, Arduino 1.6.1 or later would be supported.
Arduino 1.6.9 is the latest, as of this writing.
